Sclerotherapy
It is estimated that three-quarters of adult women have spider veins which appear as unsightly red or purple lines under the skin. Spider veins are caused by abnormal blood flow and weakening of the blood vessel wall in the affected veins. The most common causes are normal hormonal fluctuations, pregnancy and any condition or activity that puts pressure on the veins, such as gaining weight, and sitting or standing for long periods of time.
Spider veins can develop on any part of the body, including the face, but most often appear on the thighs, calves, or ankles.
Sclerotherapy is the gold standard for treating spider veins. During Sclerotherapy a saline or chemical solution is injected into the vein, irritating the lining and causing the vein to collapse and disappear.
The effects of Sclerotherapy will be noticed immediately, though a series of treatments may be required, depending upon the length and number of veins to be treated. Patients are asked to wear a compression garment for a short time after treatment to aid in keeping the treated veins collapsed. After Sclerotherapy, the treated veins should remain collapsed, but the patient may develop new spider veins, due to the same factors which caused the original veins to dilate.
